HOPE FOR THE STRUGGLING
STUDENT
Confusion! Frustration! Parents and teachers working with students
struggling with reading and learning commonly experience these emotions. You
may be experiencing them now.
Read, for a moment, the symptoms of these three children. As
you read, you may begin feeling what both they and their parents must have felt.
Brenda is a bright and articulate child. This is where the frustration
begins, because her performance is far below what is expected from a child who
seems so intelligent. She frequently misspells words, reverses letters when
she writes, and reads very poorly. Someone must stand over her to get Brenda
to do any writing or homework at all.
Mike is easily distracted, almost never finishes a task, and
causes all kinds of trouble in the classroom and on the playground. Frequently,
Mike is isolated by his peers. He struggles with reading and remembers very
little of what he reads. Troublemaker, rebellious, and hyperactive are often
words used to describe Mike.
Randy is almost the opposite of Mike. Randy will sit for hours
at a task, yet still not finish. When other students spend a half an hour on
a homework assignment, it may take Randy three hours. He is rarely able to write
notes from the chalkboard before the teacher erases them. To compound the problem,
Randy does not follow directions very well, which serves to frustrate parents
and teachers alike! It is not uncommon for Randy to be called slow, lazy or
unmotivated.
Often, as you no doubt can see, it is difficult to identify
the true nature of the problem. Is this an attitude and behavior problem, or
is it the student struggling with a learning difficulty that is causing attitude
and behavior problems?
